Time to start another great week!

Superkids
Today we had our Super Smart lesson for unit 4 of The Superkids' Club.  It's going by so quickly!  Our Super Smart today was about the 5 Senses.  Ask your child to show you their mini book tonight and tell you what they learned about today!  Tomorrow we will start unit 5--P!  I wonder who the next Supernoodle will be?!

Math
Here are the things we have been working on in math last week and this week:

  • using manipulatives to represent numbers
  • modeling comparison stories with counters
  • counting by 2s
  • dividing groups in half
  • using attributes to describe objects
  • using tools to measure time
  • using calculators to practice skip counting
  • using symbols to represent a pattern
  • dividing objects in half

Sight Words
There are no new sight words this week or next.  Instead, we will be using the next two weeks to review all the 3rd quarter sight words before report cards.  The grading period ends March 9th!
Speaking of that, report cards for the 3rd 9 weeks will come home March 14th.

Carnival t-shirts
There is a paper in your child's folder today if you are interested in ordering a Creekside Spring Carnival t-shirt.  These order forms are due March 14th.  The carnival theme this year is "Barnyard Bash".  The spring carnival this year will be Friday April 15th.  More info will come home soon!

March snack calendar
The snack calendar for March is in folders today!  Be sure to check it out to see if your child has a turn this month!  Just a reminder, everyone will have 1 or 2 turns this school year.  I try to make at least one of their turns near their birthday.  And, don't feel like you have to send something in every day, or on Monday--snacks can come in at any time during the week!

Guest Day Forms
Kindergarten guest day will be Wednesday, March 23rd, from 1:15pm-2:15pm.  Our hope is that each Kindergartener will have a grandparent or other special visitor come to school to complete the special scavenger hunt with them.

Museum Reminders
Our field trip to the Children's Museum is NEXT Monday, March 7th!  Some reminders:

  • Your child needs to bring their lunch to school Monday--all in a disposable container.
  • I will send dinosaur shirts home that we painted in class on Friday--PLEASE have your child wear theirs to school on Monday.
  • Students need to wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Chaperones--don't forget your lunch as well!  Please do not take students into the gift shop or cafeteria at the museum.
  • Chaperones--please be at school at 8:15am so we can leave.  If you plan on just meeting us at the museum-please let me know that before Monday!

Calendar
Lots of spring dates have been added to our classroom calendar!  Be sure to check out the link at the top of the blog for new dates.

Happy Leap Day!
We celebrated Leap Day today!  We had special morning work, made special crowns to celebrate, and had a special math activity.  The boys and girls thought it was so neat that leap year only happens every 4 years,  and they will be 9 years old the next time this happens!

Bucketfilling Party!
And in another celebration for today, we filled our bucketfilling jar with 20 fuzzies again after getting a 5 in library!  Woo Hoo!  We celebrated with a special snack and extra recess during activity time.  Way to go bucketfillers!

Have a great week!

TGIF!

Creekside raised funds this week for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We have some students at Creekside currently or formerly battling leukemia, and we would like to support their cause. The top three vote winners had to kiss a pig this afternoon:

1.) Mrs. Damron, $207.17
2.) Dr. Heiden, $113.32
3.) Mrs. Daudy, $92.25

Our total raised is $1,001.14!!!!  WOO HOO!  Thanks everyone who donated!  Pucker up!

We even talked Mrs. Vidal into giving the pig a smooch!

Donuts with Dad
Creekside is holding Donuts with Dad events on Wednesday, March 9th and on Friday, March 11th. These events are free. Because we believe turn-out will be huge, we have two events:
  • K-2 students with dads - Wednesday, March 9th from 7:00-7:30 AM
  • 3-4 students with dads - Friday, March 11th from 7:00-7:30 AM
Both mornings will be in our gym.
We ask that dads try to attend the event that corresponds with their child's current grade level. However, dads that have children in more than one grade can choose the event that works the best for their schedule and attend one event with their children. Also, if one event works better than the other, dads can attend either event with their son or daughter.
The menu will be donuts and fruit along with fruit juice and coffee.  Please RSVP on the google doc that was sent out in an email, on Facebook, or call the school.

Popsicle Party!
Today everyone was here and on time!  We finally filled in our last day on the 20 perfect days popsicle chart and got to have our popsicle party after lunch today!  Woo hoo!

Carnival t-shirts
The Creekside Spring Carnival is quickly approaching!  The carnival is Friday April 15th.  Carnival t-shirt order forms will come home Monday IF you want to order one.    Forms are due March 14th.

Have a GREAT weekend!!

Happy Monday!

Coin Wars for LLS
Creekside is going to be raising funds for the next three days for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We have some students at Creekside currently or formerly battling leukemia, and we would like to support their cause. Did you know that every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer? Please join Creekside Elementary in the fight against blood cancers by donating in support of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Students are invited to participate in coin wars Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week. Students will put their change, cash or checks (made to LLS) in the box of their choice. Each box has a teacher's name and picture on it. The teacher or teachers with the most money will "WIN” and KISS A PIG on Friday!!! Pucker up!

Skippyjon Jones Play
We had a great time this morning at the play! Check out our pictures below!

Mrs. Vidal--body safety lesson
Today Mrs. Vidal came to do her monthly guidance lesson. The topic this month was personal and body safety. Check out the letter from Mrs. Vidal in your child's folder tonight for more information from her.

Have a great week!

Friday--Lots of Pictures!

Happy Friday!

Skippyjon Jones Play
Just a reminder--I have a couple students that didn't return the permission slip/$2 for the play field trip on Monday.  PLEASE send this in first thing Monday morning so they can go with us to watch Skippyjon Jones!

Assessments
I have been finishing up round one of assessments this week for report cards.  I have noticed 2 areas of weakness as a whole: subtraction (with numbers up to 5) and identifying 3-D shapes (cube, cone, cylinder, sphere).  Any extra help on these two things at home would be greatly appreciated!  We will keep working in the classroom too!

Officer Baird
Yesterday we went to a presentation by Johnson County Sheriff Deputy Baird.  Deputy Baird taught us about personal space, saying no to strangers, and we even got to meet his police dog Benny!  Check out the pictures below.

Literacy Centers
Last week we added a lot of new literacy activities to the sight word, word work, and handwriting centers that are part of literacy center time in the mornings (in addition to computers, reading center, writing center, and pocket chart).  The boys and girls LOVED the new activities in the 3 centers!  Check out the pictures below.
Magnifying sight words--use the magnifying glass to read the tiny sight words, and then write the word on the line.

Sight word search--shake the bottle of sand to find the hidden sight words written inside on squares.  Highlight the word on the recording sheet when you find it!

 Sequencing picture puzzles.

Handwriting ABCs--write words from around the room on the correct page in your ABC book.

Bananagrams--as fun to say as it is to play!  Use the bananagram tiles (think scrabble tiles) to make as many words as you can think of!

Have a great weekend!!

Halfway through the week already!

Superkids
We are finishing up unit N this week and will have our Super Smart on Friday.  Then on Monday, we will start unit 4 of Superkids' Club!  We are moving right along!  In the next unit the Superkids will get a boss for their club--stay tuned to find out what fun name the boss has!

Superkids Test
Speaking of Superkids, the class took or started taking the first Superkids' Club progress test today in computer lab.  Once everyone has finished and I have those results recorded, I will send the test score sheets home.  Be on the lookout and let me know if you have questions or concerns!

Math
This week in math we will be doing the following:

  • introducing the dime
  • making coin exchanges (5 pennies for 1 nickle, ect.)
  • drawing number stories
  • counting by 2s to 20

Writer's Workshop
This week in Writer's Workshop I introduced 5 new posters on our writing wall to help students remember the 5 parts of a great sentence.  They are:

  • capital letter at beginning of sentence
  • lower case letters throughout sentence
  • sight words spelled correctly
  • finger spaces between words
  • correct punctuation at end of sentence
As students are writing, if they remember all 5 on their own without my help, they have started getting a sticker on their notebook page.  I know a sticker doesn't sound like much, but they LOVE it!  It's great motivation for them to write their sentences correctly.  As you watch your child write at home, please help them remember the 5 parts of a great sentence.

Skippyjon Jones Play
In your child's folder today you will find a pink permission slip to go to a Skippyjon Jones play at the high school on MONDAY!  We apologize for the SHORT notice, but we just found out today that we could go.  Please sign and return either tomorrow or Friday, and if the money is an issue to get before Monday, please let me know so the school can help.  We are very excited about it!  I actually have the Skippyjon Jones book in our classroom library that the play is based on, so the boys and girls are really excited to see it come to life!  We won't need chaperones for this day, but check out the next opportunity below!

Children's Museum Field Trip
Yesterday your child brought home a yellow permission slip for the Children's Museum field trip on March 7th.  Due to our generous PTO buying a school membership, the only cost for your child is $1 to ride the carousel that day.  We will need lots of chaperones this day so please consider coming!  Money and permission slips are due February 29th.

Art to Remember Forms
Today in folders you will find Art to Remember order forms from Mrs. Garrett.  There is no pressure to order.  But if you would like to order an item with your child's artwork on it there are lots of great options!  The order form/money is due February 24th.

Mercedes--Clip Hall of Fame
Today we had a HUGE celebration!! As you may remember, every time a child clips up to pink, they get a sticker on their clip.  When they have 5 stickers, their clip gets "retired" onto the Clip Hall of fame chart.  Then they get a new, special colored clip to start using every day.  Today we had our first friend clip up to pink for the first time and become the first member of the hall of fame!  Way to go Mercedes!  We had a little celebration for her at the end of the day.  Ask your child how close they are to becoming part of the hall of fame--we have several that are so close!

WHEW!  That was a lot today!  Thanks for reading all the way to the end.  Have a great day!
