It's the end of September!

I can't believe it's the end of September already!  When we come back to school October will have started, and the countdown to parent teacher conferences, the zoo field trip, and Fall Break will be on!  We have a busy next couple of weeks!

Fall Book Fair Parent Night
The Creekside Fall Book Fair will be the week of October 9th.  Students can bring money to shop during class, or you can come to the parent night: Thursday, October 12th 3-7pm.  Many of you will already be here on this night for parent teacher conferences. :)

Storybook Night
Mark your calendars!  Creekside Storybook night is set for Thursday, October 26th 6-7:30.  This is a free event where families can come walk around to different rooms in the school and hear favorite children's stories from real characters (teachers have a blast dressing up as the story characters!)  Then stick around and your child can go trick or treating in the gym!  They can come dressed in their Halloween costume or street clothes.

In Folders Monday
I try not to send important things home on Fridays, which means LOTS of things will be coming home on Monday!
***Book It calendars for October (refer to earlier blog post for more info).
***Homework-new!  I updated the homework sheet--everyone in the class knew 8/9 or 9/9 sight words when I assessed today!  WOO HOO!  So, I put the 2nd 9 weeks words on the homework sheet so we can get a jump start on learning those.  Keep up the great work at home!  I also changed letter sounds to beginning sounds in words, counting to 100 by 1s (if your child can count to 100 skip this part) I added counting to 100 by 10s.
***Scholastic book order--remember no obligation to order, just if you want to add to your home library.
***Parent Teacher conference confirmation--please check the date and time, and let me know as soon as possible of any conflicts so we can reschedule.  I have a little wiggle room, especially later in the evening those two nights.  Please put this slip in a safe place so you won't forget to come see me!!

Happy Monday!

College Go Week!
College Go Week!  September 25-29, 2017.

Dress Up Days will be:
Monday: Hats off to College and Career Readiness Day (Hat Day)
Tuesday: Time to interview Tuesday (Dress for Success Day)
Wednesday: We want to be....Wednesday (Career Dress-up Day)
Thursday: College Gear Day (College Gear or Colors Day)
Friday: Celebrate being a Creekside Cougar (Creekside Spirit Wear Day)

Math Log ins
I've had some parents email asking about computer games for home.  At school during computer time we use the literacy and math websites: starfall.com and ABCya.com.  You can also utilize the Superkids online at home--there will be more to play later in the year!  Right now there are only the 4 wordless Superkids stories.  In your child's folder today you will find log in information and your child's password if you are interested in logging on and getting some math practice at home.  There are some great manipulatives and games!

Learn More Magazine
On Friday your child will bring home the magazine and the information to think about college.  We will review this during the week this week.  Some of the activity pages include: Kindergarten pages: 7, 10, 13, 14.  Please consider p.15--as it is a contest to get $529 in a savings account for college.

Operation Bundle Up
Creekside is participating in operation bundle up to help the United Way.  If you have any gently used coats that you are looking to part with, please send to the office between now and October 13th.  Thanks for your help!

Zoo Permission Slips
Permission slips and money for the zoo are due MONDAY.  I think I am missing about 6 kids.  I will send home more information about the trip on Thursday, October 12. We will paint dolphin t-shirts for the students to wear.  I will send those home on that Thursday too (or pass them out at conferences). Also, because of lack of bus space, parents will need to meet at Creekside and then drive to the zoo.  Carpooling with other parents is a great idea to save on parking--the zoo will still charge you to park that day ($6) even though it's a field trip. :(  If you are signed up to chaperone, please be in my classroom at 8am on Friday (we are leaving at 8:15).  Thanks!

Walk A Thon Money
Don't forget to send that Walk A Thon money in when you are finished collecting!  All money is due by next Wednesday!  Don't forget to write your child's name and    t-shirt size on their envelope.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Thank you to everyone for signing up for a conference time slot on October 11th and 12th!  The teachers are meeting Thursday afternoon to schedule conferences to make sure those with siblings are close in time but not over lapping. :)  I will send a slip home next Monday with your day/time on it.  If something changes and your time won't work for you, please let me know as soon as possible so we can reschedule.  At conferences I will hand out report cards for the first 9 weeks!

Another Busy Week Ahead!

Operation Bundle Up
Creekside is participating in operation bundle up to help the United Way.  If you have any gently used coats that you are looking to part with, please send to the office between now and October 13th.  Thanks for your help!

Walk A Thon
In your child's folder today you will find a yellow piece of paper and an envelope.  The yellow paper has all the details of our Walk A Thon fundraiser for PTO, which kicks off today.  Please try to collect over the whole two weeks.  We are trying to reach a goal of $10,500.   I know we can reach this goal with everyone's help!

Here is the basic info:  kick off-9/19, collect until 10/4, walk on 10/6.  Incentive chart with prizes you can win will come home in a few days on purple paper.

Superkids Progress Test
We took our first progress test in Superkids today.  As soon as I get those graded and recorded, I will send them home.  Please look over the results and let me know if you have any questions or concerns!  We will take a progress test after every 2-3 letters/units.

Vision Screening papers
In your child's folder today, you will find a permission slip for vision screening.  All FCS Kindergarten students will go get this free vision screening on October 4th at Northwood.  Please sign the permission slip for them to ride the bus to Northwood.  The paper says due back yesterday--but we didn't get the papers until yesterday afternoon, so please just send back ASAP--preferably by the end of the week!

Book It
I have signed our class up to participate in Book It! this year.  If you are unfamiliar with the program, it is a monthly reading program that partners with Pizza Hut, and runs from October-March.  Each month the students will bring home a reading calendar.  Any night you read at home together, color in the calendar.  All students who bring back a completed calendar at the end of the month get a free pizza certificate from Pizza Hut!  All students who complete all 6 months will get a pizza party with me in the classroom one day during lunch.  Look for the October log to come home soon!  Happy Reading!

Box Tops
Please keep sending in Box Tops labels to our classroom and help our school earn money!  Also we gladly accept Box Tops, Campbell's Labels (also found on V8, Pepperidge Farm, etc.), Coke points (worth $.05 each; parents can enter those online and donate the points themselves, or I can enter them), Tyson Project A+ labels ($.24 each), Sunbeam School Spirit upc's ($.05 each), and also pop can tabs for Riley Hospital.

Zoo Permission Slips
Permission slips and money for the zoo will be due soon.  Please keep in mind we are in need of many parents to chaperone.  I am still missing several permission slips.  Volunteers will need to have a background check on file prior to the trip.  Also, because of lack of bus space, parents will need to meet at Creekside and then drive to the zoo.  Carpooling with other parents is a great idea to save on parking--the zoo will still charge you to park that day ($6) even though it's a field trip. :(

Have a great week!

Parent Teacher Conferences (also known as Creekside Family Conferences!)
In your child's folder TODAY you will find a sign up sheet for parent-teacher conferences that will be held October 11th and 12th.  Please sign up your preference for a time to come meet with me to discuss your child's progress, and return to school as soon as possible.  It will be no problem giving everyone their first choice of day, but please understand you may not get your top choice of times.  I will do my best to accommodate each family, but with 21 children and many having the same top three choices, it just isn't possible.  But I promise to get as close to your time as I can.  I will give preference first to those who turn their forms in sooner!  Our goal is 100% parent participation, so let's make it happen for our class!

Specials Schedule
Monday--Library
Tuesday--PE
Wednesday--Computer Lab
Thursday--Art
Friday--Music

Math
Here are the skills we will work on this week during our whole group math lessons:
  • Used "quick look" cards with dots on them to quickly tell how many dots were on a card
  • Examine, describe, and compare triangles
  • Use number boards to explore the concept of "one more" and growing patterns
  • Use concrete materials to begin exploring and talking about addition and subtraction
Don't forget that some lessons contain the Math Home Link paper that give your and your child an extension on the lesson that many times connects the skill to "real life."  You do NOT need to send the paper of the completed assignment back to school.  This is for home use only.  Thank you!

Happy Monday!

writing the kid way
We are also working hard on listening to sounds in words and writing the letters that make those sounds. Please look in your child’s folder tomorrow in front of homework sheets for a paper called, “Writing the kid way” that gives you information on how your child is learning to write words. We will be working on the first and second sound in words during Superkids, and working together on writing whole words during Writer’s Workshop.

PTO Information
Creekside's PTO is hosting a Dine to Donate tomorrow night, Tuesday, September 12th at Dairy Queen in Franklin. Creekside's PTO will receive 15% of the stores total sales between 6-9 pm. You don't have to mention anything and no flier is needed. So, if you need some dinner or ice cream sounds good, please stop by and support our PTO. Tell your neighbors, friends and family too! There is another Dine to Donate going on at the same time for another organization, so please be patient if it is busy. Busy just means more sales and more money for our PTO!

Also, we have our first Creekside PTO Meeting of the year tomorrowTuesday, September 12th at 6 pm at Creekside in the LGI Room.

Superkids
We met our third Superkid on Friday. Well, he’s not so much a Superkid, as he is a Superpet! Ask your child to tell you all about Golly! This week we will focus on the sound /g/ as in the word, “gum.” The boys and girls will also take what they have learned about writing Cc to form Gg during our daily handwriting practice.  During our Superkids morning routine, we have also been practicing recognizing and naming rhyming words, and recognizing words that begin with the same sound.

Math
Here is a quick look at Math for the week: Triangles, problem solving, counting 1-1, counting to match a given numeral, and number sequence. Today we played a game called Top-It (think war) with the same dot cards that we played memory with last week.

Have a great week!

Happy Thursday!

School Pictures
School pictures at Creekside are upcoming on this Monday, September 11th. You may order ahead online at https://inter-state.com/shop and use code 20828QA, or you can return the order form to your child's teacher by picture day. As a reminder, all students have his/her picture taken, but it is up to you if you wish to order pictures. We will also have school picture retakes on November 15th in case you aren't happy with the original photo session.
Dress well and SMILE on Monday!

R.E.D. Folders
I've had a couple questions about R.E.D. folders.  Just a few (hopefully helpful) reminders! :)
1.  The folder will come home on Tuesday, and needs to be returned by Friday.
2.  Every other week their will be a worksheet to go with the book.
3.  PLEASE sign the reading log when you return the folder to school, so i know I can keep the folder and prepare it for next week.
4.  You can keep the paper book at home.
Let me know if you have questions!

Box Tops
Congrats!  Our class WON the box top collection for August!  We brought in the most box tops out of all the classes in the whole school!  We will have an ice cream treat from PTO as a reward soon.  Keep sending those box tops in!

Bingo For Books
Please consider joining us at Creekside next Wednesday for Bingo for Books!  This event is completely free!  Families will get a free pizza dinner, and each child playing Bingo will leave with a free book!  I'll be there helping out, stop by and say hi!

Field Trip
A formal permission slip will come home Monday--but---mark your calendars!  Our Kindergarten field trip to the Indianapolis Zoo will be on Friday, October 13!  We need lots of chaperones to help make this a great day!  Parents, grandparents, or other family members are more than welcome to come chaperone--all chaperones must have a current background check in the office before the day of the field trip!  The cost for each child and chaperone is $6.  Sorry--no younger siblings may attend.  Each child and chaperone will need to bring a sack lunch to school that day.  We will be painting t-shirts later this month for us all to wear that day.  Chaperones will need to drive separate from the bus (and the zoo requires you pay the $6 parking fee--so carpooling is a great option!)  Students must ride the bus to and from school.

Have a great afternoon!

Happy 3 day weekend!

Labor Day
Remember--NO SCHOOL Monday, September 4th, due to Labor Day.  Have a great 3 day weekend, and see you Tuesday!

Flexible Seating
Today we started using our new alternative seating!  We now have stools, more yoga ball chairs, crate seats, cushions, scoop chairs, and lap trays.  We will rotate the chairs each day for the first few weeks, until all students get a chance to try out all of them.  After that, they will get to sign up for the seat they want for the day when they are doing the rest of their morning jobs.  I am so excited to start this!  Thank you to everyone who shared my donors choose project on Facebook!  Be sure to check out our class Facebook page for pics and videos from the seats in action today at Mrs. Dunn's Kindergarten!!

R.E.D. Folders
Don't forget to read the story in your child's folder, and complete the worksheet when there is one.  Folders will come home Tuesdays, and are due on Fridays.  I am missing a couple today, so please return on Tuesday.  Don't forget to sign the reading log in the back!

Snack Calendar
Below is the snack calendar for September!  Don’t forget when sending in snacks, please send in something for the whole class.  Please don’t send in drinks, something that requires utensils or eat, or anything that needs refrigeration.  Items like cereal, crackers, fruit snacks, and granola bars are always popular snack choices.    If you could, please send in a package of small Dixie cups with the snack, if it is not individually wrapped. We have 24 students if you send in something individually wrapped.   You do not need to send in one thing per day, just one or two big boxes of something.

Thanks for your help!
