Happy Monday!

Progress Tests
We took the first progress test for The Superkids Club last week!  I have graded those and they went home in folders on Friday.  Overall we did great!  I am so proud of the boys and girls' hard work!  Keep it up!  If you have questions or concerns as you look those tests over, please let me know!

Book It calendars
Don't forget to send Book It reading calendar logs back in one day this week!  I will put the new March calendar in folders on Wednesday.  Can you believe it's already March?!

Play Permission Slip
On Monday, March 13, all the Kindergarten classes will be heading over to the high school in the morning to watch a Junie B. Jones play.  The cost of the field trip is $2 for the ticket, and your child will need to bring their lunch to school that day.  There is a purple permission slip in folders today with more info.  Please have the permission slip and money back no later than next Monday so we can attend this fun play!

Math
This week we will be making a graph based on a collection of items.  Our class will be collecting BOX TOPS!  Please keep sending those in!  We collect them anyway, so for the next week or two in math we will get double use out of them. :)

Read Across America Week
This week is Read Across America week! We will be reading Dr. Seuss stories each day, and will have a special snack to go with each one! Our morning work tubs and Friday Funday centers will all be Dr. Seuss themed as well! Stay tuned for pictures! It's going to be a fun week in Room 110!

March Snack Calendar
Don’t forget when sending in snacks, please send in something for the whole class.  Please don’t send in drinks, something that requires utensils or eat, or anything that needs refrigeration.  Items like cereal, crackers, fruit snacks, and granola bars are always popular snack choices.    If you could, please send in a package of small Dixie cups with the snack, if it is not individually wrapped. We have 24 students if you send in something individually wrapped.   You do not need to send in one thing per day, just one or two big boxes of something.

Happy Thursday!

Dessert Day
TomorrowFriday Feb. 24, is Dessert Day!!  Each student who purchases a school lunch will receive a mini ice cream sandwich!!

Art Club
I know we had a lot of students sign up for the Art Club that starts next week, but only 5 kids from our class were chosen. If your child was one of those five, there will be a note in his/her folder today. If you do not have a note, please be sure your child understands that he/she will not be staying after school next week for art club. Thanks!

Math
Today in math we worked on number combinations and numbers that add to 10. We had 10 beads on a pipe cleaner and moved them on different sides. Then we recorded a couple of our number sentences in our math journals. Your child is bringing their bead string home today. They will need it to do their homework-math home link paper! Then they can keep this at home.

Sight Words
The sight words for this week are: three, four, five.  There are no new sight words next week.  Instead, we will be using the next two weeks to review all the 3rd quarter sight words before report cards.  The grading period ends March 3rd!
Speaking of that, report cards for the 3rd 9 weeks will come home March 9th.

Writer's Workshop
This week in Writer's Workshop I introduced 5 new posters on our writing wall to help students remember the 5 parts of a great sentence.  They are:

  • capital letter at beginning of sentence
  • lower case letters throughout sentence
  • sight words spelled correctly
  • finger spaces between words
  • correct punctuation at end of sentence
As students are writing, if they remember all 5 on their own without my help, they have started getting a sticker on their notebook page.  I know a sticker doesn't sound like much, but they LOVE it!  It's great motivation for them to write their sentences correctly.  As you watch your child write at home, please help them remember the 5 parts of a great sentence.

Three day weekend!

Art to Remember Forms
Art to Remember forms are in folders today.  Art to Remember is a special project from our art teacher.  The boys and girls drew pictures, and if you want, you can order through this company to have that artwork put on mugs, bags, and more.  Here is more info from Mrs. Garrett:
The order forms are personalized for each student with a photo of their artwork on the form for parents to see.  They are due February 27 (it says that on the form) and parents can order online or send the form back in. If a student loses their form at some point, send them to me and I will give them another one.

NO SCHOOL MONDAY!
Remember, we don't have school on Monday due to President's Day.  Enjoy the three day weekend!

Kelso's Choices
This afternoon, Ms. Brown came in and did our monthly guidance lesson.  We reviewed Kelso's wheel of choices (how to solve small problems), read a story, and helped Lily the frog solve her problems!  The boys and girls were excellent listeners and helpers today!

Homework
I noticed some issues with the handwriting homework (the back page of the homework sheet) this week.  We have been working really hard at school on capital letters at the beginning of sentences, finger spaces between words, and appropriate ending marks at the end of the sentence.  Lots of kids were forgetting this on the homework!  Please reinforce this skill and remind your child to include these parts of the sentence when writing at home.  Thanks!

Tuesday
I will be out of the classroom from arrival-lunch on Tuesday at a meeting.  I will pick the class up from lunch and be with them the rest of the day.  Some were a little nervous when I told them this today.  Please remind them of this Tuesday morning.  We have an excellent sub so they will be in good hands.  Also, please remind them about "all star good behavior" for a sub.  Thanks!

Have a beautiful, sunny, three day weekend!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Kindergarten Art Club
If you are interested in your child staying after school Thursdays in March for art club, please see the form that went home in your child's folder yesterday. Please note--Mrs. Garrett is only taking 15 students, who will be chosen at random.  Just because you sign the form doesn't mean your child will get to participate in art club.  You will be notified if your child is picked.

Sight Words
This week we are working on the words: one, two.  Please add these to your practice at home!

Valentine's Day!
We had a lot of fun at our party today!  We opened our cards from each other, played Valentine BINGO, graphed candy hearts, had a fun snack, and made a craft. Your child is bringing their bag of cards home today.  They are also bringing home a present that we made for you!  Happy Valentine's Day! Thanks to all the parents that sent something in for today!  Check out our pictures below!

Assessments
I have been finishing up some of assessments this week for report cards.  I have noticed 2 areas of weakness as a whole class: subtraction (with numbers up to 5) and identifying 3-D shapes (cube, cone, cylinder, sphere).  Any extra help on these two things at home would be greatly appreciated!  We will keep working in the classroom too!

Superkids
This week in Superkids we have finished our B/R books, had a Super Smart lesson on mixing colors, and tomorrow we will start Unit 3-N!  Whew!  What a lot of learning!

Have a great week!

Happy Friday!

Progress Tests
Progress Tests from Superkids went home earlier this week.  Please let me know if you have questions or concerns!  We did great overall as a class!

Composite Pictures
Composite pictures are in folders today if you orders those with school pictures.

Superkids
On Tuesday next week we will finish until 2 "R" in Superkids Club so we will take the first progress test for this half of the reading series sometime soon.  We are moving right along with Kindergarten!

Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is next Tuesday!  Thanks to everyone who has sent in donations or cards already.  Please try to have everything else in by Monday so I can prep for Tuesday! :)  I am going to run our "party" like Friday Funday centers, where the students will rotate through each station, so I will not need parent helpers for the party.

Iowa Testing
Next week we will be taking one more test that will help with high ability identification. We will be working on it Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday if needed.

No School--February 20
Don't forget--we will not have school on Monday, February 20, in honor of President's Day.

Jump Rope for Heart
Don't forget that all Jump Rope for Heart money is due next Wednesday!  Our Jump Rope day is Friday.  On Friday, please send your child to school in comfortable clothes to jump in and TENNIS SHOES!
