Happy Thursday!

Guest Reader
Today we had Austin from 2nd grade come read to our class!  He did a great job and we were all excellent listeners!

Writer's Workshop
This week we have been working on a writing project titled "We are 'Flipping' Out about Summer!"  We finished and now they are on display in the hallway.  We did a great job writing about the things we are looking forward to doing this summer!

DIBELS
This morning we took our end of year DIBELS test.  The results are in.... OUR ENTIRE CLASS SCORED GREEN ON ALL 3 PARTS OF THE TEST AND THE OVERALL COMPOSITE SCORE!  I am so proud of this class this year and all their hard work in class this year!  We celebrated our accomplishments with extra recess this morning.  Thank you for all your help at home!  Individual scores will come home later in May when the testing window closes.

Ice Cream!
After lunch today we got ice cream sandwiches from PTO for winning the box top collection contest for March.  Wow!  Today has been a good day in Room 110!

Mile Run
Don't forget!  Tomorrow instead of specials, our class will participate in the mile run!  We are running outside so please make sure your child is dressed in both comfy and outdoor appropriate clothing.  Also--your child needs to wear TENNIS SHOES to school tomorrow!

Have a great day!

Superkids
On Friday we began our LAST Superkids book!  We are currently working with the letters Xx and Yy and will finish up with Zz soon!

DIBELS and NWEA
Our class is finished with end of the year NWEA testing, and those results will be sent home once the testing window closes.  On Thursday morning the kiddos will be pulled out to Mrs. McCullough's room for end of the year DIBELS testing.  These are the tests where the children are timed for one minute on how well they can break apart the sounds in words (ex: sled= /s/ /l/ /e/ /d/) and read nonsense cvc words, or each sound if they can't read the whole word.  Those results will also be sent home once they are made available.

Mile Run Day
All students at Creekside will be participating in the Mile Run for PE this Friday! Unless something changes, Kindergarten is scheduled to run in the morning.  Please be sure your child dresses in comfortable layers, as I am sure it will be chilly when we are outside, but the kids may warm up quickly as they are running.  And PLEASE...have your child wear tennis shoes Friday!

Kindergarten Awards Day
Kindergarten Awards Day will be Thursday, May 19 from 12:30-2:00. Kindergartners will dress up as their favorite Superkid!  We will begin the program in the gym with all 5 classes singing some of our favorite Superkids songs.  After singing, children will be called up one at a time to receive their Kindergarten certificate from Dr. Heiden.  Then, we will watch a video of some of the highlights of our year!  Finally, we will return to our classroom where the children will share their Kindergarten Portfolios with you!  Please plan on attending this event.  Children may leave with parents at the conclusion of the program.

Looking Ahead
Monday, May 23 is Field Day at Creekside.  More information pertaining to our class will be sent home on this in the coming weeks, now is the time to sign up to help run the outdoor activities.  Dr. Heiden sent an email with a sign-up sheet attached earlier today.  Please fill that out if you are interested in helping.  It is such a fun day and a great way to celebrate the end of the school year!

Tuesday, May 24 is the last day of school!  This is also Creekside Awards Day (different from Kindergarten Awards Day).  Students who have had perfect attendance or outstanding attendance all year will be recognized at this program, which is from 9:00-10:30.

Have a great week!

Happy Friday!

Title 1 Folders
If your child goes to title one please read the following from Mrs. McCullough
We are sending these home today and the students do NOT need to return them.  They can keep them at home.

Recess
Just a friendly reminder that we do go to recess early in our school day (9:45-10:15).  Please try to make sure and send a jacket with students to school especially since their recess is so early.  Even if it is warm later in the day, it may be chilly still in the morning.  Mrs. Robbins is running out of jackets and sweatshirts to loan to students if they need something.

Superkids Test
Today we finished our most recent progress test for Superkids.  I am sending those test results home today.  Please look over them and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Homework---periods!
Today as I was grading the Superkids worksheet that went home for homework last night, I noticed a common problem.  MANY students wrote the sentences nicely, but did not have any periods at the end of their sentences!  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE when you are working with your child at home, check to make sure that they are including all the parts of a good sentence in their writing (capital letter at beginning, lower case letters throughout, finger spaces between words, ending mark).  Thank you for your help with this.

Next Week Info
In your child's folder on Monday, you will see a permission slip for our final field trip of the year. We will be going to Franklin College, the park, and the library. It is a free trip, so please sign and return the slip as soon as you can. We will have our DIBELS testing on Thursday next week. I hope the results are as great as our NWEA testing! This is the test where students are pulled individually to work words out, do letter naming, and read nonsense words.

Have a great weekend!  It's supposed to be beautiful and sunny!

Happy Tuesday!

Mrs. Vidal
Yesterday Mrs. Vidal came to do her monthly guidance lesson.  She talked about self control.  Ask your child if they were able to NOT pop the bubbles! :)

Field Trip
We are super excited to be able to go on one last field trip before the end of the year.  On Friday, May 20 Kindergarten students will be visiting Franklin College, the Johnson County Public Library, and the Franklin park, where we will be enjoying a picnic lunch.  This field trip is FREE and chaperones will not be needed.  Permission slips will be coming home soon.  Signed permission slips will be due back by Monday, May 16.

Please plan on attending or sending another family member to this event.  Children may leave with parents at the conclusion of the program.

Carnival night!

Math
Here are some of the skills we have been working on in math lately:

  • Money review (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters-counting, exchanging)
  • Place Value-we have done so many different activities to practice and review place value including making 10's and 1's using craft sticks and base 10 blocks.  All of the children should now be able to represent numbers up to 99 using 10's and 1's.
  • Number Scrolls-the children have been writing numbers on number scrolls once they finish other work and have extra time.  Some of our children are up to 300!
  • Addition and Subtraction practice within 10.

NWEA Testing
We have finished testing!  We still have DIBELS testing that will happen on April 27.  The entire class grew so much on NWEA from fall-spring.  I am SO PROUD of all their hard work at school this year.  Thanks for your help at home!

Kindergarten Awards Day
Kindergarten Awards Day will be Thursday, May 19 from 12:30-2:00. Kindergartners will dress up as their favorite Superkid!  All 5 classes will be singing (on the stage in the gym) 6 of our favorite Superkids songs before receiving their Kindergarten certificates from Dr. Heiden.  Prior to returning to classrooms to share portfolios with you, we will watch a short video of some of the highlights of our year in Kindergarten!  Please plan on being here that day to celebrate your child's successes in Kindergarten!  And start talking with your child about which Superkid they would like to be.  You can look through the Superkids books to help plan the outfit/costume.  :)  Families are welcome to attend the program in the gym!

Creekside Spring Carnival--Barnyard Bash
Tonight is the night!  The Creekside Spring Carnival is from 5:30-8:30.  If you didn't pre-order a wristband for your child to play the games and jump in the bounce houses, you can buy a wristband at the door for $10.  I'll be working outside in the back at the petting zoo--stop by and say hi!  Should be a fun night!

Reader's Theater
Today we finally performed The Glum Princess for Miss Records' class.  The boys and girls did a GREAT job!  They were excellent at all the things we have been practicing  this week: reading fluently, with expression, and using a loud voice!  I am very proud of them.  We actually saw Mrs. Nolot's class walking by and she asked if we could perform for them too, so we read our play twice!  Both first grade classes were great listeners too.  It was a lot of fun!

Have a great weekend!

Earth Day
We have been talking in class about Earth Day and what it means to help take care of the Earth.  Friday and today in Writer's workshop we created a special Earth Day project with our promises of what we will do to help take care of the Earth.  We colored coffee filters with markers and then sprayed them with water so the colors would run together to look like the Earth.  Then I took the boys and girls' pictures to glue underneath so it would like like they were holding up the Earth.  Today we added the writing piece.  These projects are now displayed outside our classroom.  They turned out great!

Have a great week!

Specials Trophy
As you may know, in specials every day, the class gets a score from 1-5 based on their behavior and participation.  The specials teachers keep track of the scores, and each of the 9 weeks the class with the highest score in the whole school gets a special trophy to display in their classroom.  GUESS WHAT?!  We won for the third nine weeks! Woo hoo!

Welcome Back!

Superkids
We started unit 8 today in The Superkids' Club!  This year is just flying by!  In unit 8, we will discuss K and Qu.  We will read a play that the Superkids are putting on called The Glum Princess.  We are going to try to do a Reader's Theater with the play next week or the week after and perform it for Miss Records' first grade class!

Math
We are almost finished with unit 7 in math.  Today we started making number scrolls!  Most of the class got their first blank number grid filled in from 1-100, and taped another paper on to write 101-200!  We are going to work on this project from time to time over the next couple of weeks in math.  I challenged the class--the highest I've ever had anyone get is 700.  Some of the boys and girls want to write all the way to 1000!

Sight Words
This week our sight words are: who, where, what.  Please add these to your practice at home!

NWEA
End of year NWEA testing is next week!  We will test reading and math on the computer (Times/days are TBA).  Please make sure to remind your child to try their best and show what they have learned this year!  Also make sure they are getting plenty of sleep, and a good breakfast!
