Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a great relaxing Fall Break!  Before we know it, Thanksgiving will be here!  Here are some reminders and new info for the week ahead!

Homework
Often we will be attaching a sheet of ice cream lined paper to the homework sheet when the children have several things to write.  Please leave that paper attached so that it doesn't get lost.

Recess
The past couple of weeks have been chilly at recess.  In fact, there were a few days the temperature struggled to reach 50 by the time we went out at 9:45.  Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for morning recess and has a jacket to wear.

Creekside Pumpkin Decorating Contest
Fun for fall!  If you want to have your child participate, please read on!  Bring a decorated (small-medium size) pumpkin that you have decorated to Mrs. Garrett’s room between 7:15am-7:40am on October 28-30th . NO CARVED PUMPKINS! Your pumpkin will be on display for teachers to vote on Friday, October 30th . Categories are: Scariest, Most Creative and Funniest!!! Winners will receive prizes! (Please take pumpkin home that Friday)

United Way Fundraiser
Each fall Franklin Community schools raise money for United Way of Johnson County.  Teachers do lots of activities to raise money.  There will also be a "Coin War".   The building that collects the most change will win the UWJC Bragging Rights Traveling Trophy and Dr. Clendening will serve lunch one day.  This is something easy and a fun way for students to participate.  Please send in any loose change if you are able this week to help raise money for those in need!

Sight words
The sight words we are working on this week are: we, my, like.  Please practice these at home!

Math take home books
In your child's folder today you will find a small Everyday Math home links book.  This book is yours to keep at home!  Inside the book you will find all kinds of games and activities to help reinforce and practice the skills that we will be doing in math at school for the next 9 weeks,  Please keep this book in a safe place and practice!

Halloween Program
Mark your calendars for the Kindergarten Halloween program!  An "official" invitation will be coming home soon, but until then mark your calendars for Thursday, October 29 from 6-7 pm.  Kindergartners will come dressed in Halloween costumes and put on a performance for families and friends!

Superkids
Today we met a new Superkid...Sal!  Here are some questions to prompt discussion at home!
Who is the Superkid? Sal
What is the first letter in his name? S
What sound does S make? /s/
What does Sal like to do? Play sports--skateboard, swim, stickball, ect.

Math
Here is what we will be working on in math this week:
  • Writing numbers 0-10.
  • Reviewing color patterns.
  • Estimating objects.
  • Graphing dice rolls.
  • Introducing the pan balance.

Writer's Workshop
We are really going to start working hard in Writer's Workshop!  We are going to have a major focus on sounding out words and writing the sounds that we hear, to match what we are drawing in our notebooks.  When practicing this at home, PLEASE do not tell your child the spelling of the words.  Have them work out the word, and write down all the sounds they hear (the words will look a little silly to you!) The silent letters and tricks will come later.  But sounding out the words "the kid-way" is a very important step in your child's reading and writing development.  Thanks for your help with this!

Have a great week!!
