Happy 3 day weekend!

Superkids
Yesterday we began our last unit in the "Meet the Superkids" series.  The title of the book is, Us.  In this unit, we review all of the Superkids and focus on the letter Uu.  As with the 4 other vowels, we will focus on the short sound that Uu makes as in the word, "umbrella."

Math
Here are the skills we have been working on this week and will work on next week in math.
  • Representing 2-digit numbers with manipulatives as groups of 10's and 1's
  • Using calculators to count up and back
  • Measuring with non-standard "feet."
  • Practicing measuring techniques
  • Learning to understand the need for standard measurement units
  • Counting by 5's

100th Day of School
Our 100th Day of school is coming up next Friday!  After Superkids, most of our day will be comprised of literacy and math centers that focus on the number 100.  Our day will be so much fun!

Pizza Party
Friday, January 29 will be the Kindergarten Pizza party for all of the children who are able to count to 100 by the 100th day of school!  We will be ordering pizza from Chicago's and have our celebration at 1:00.  Each child that is invited will receive one slice of pizza (this will replace our daily snack) and a drink.  100% of our class has gotten an invitation to the party!  Way to go!

High Ability Testing for First Grade
Kindergarten has 3 practice tests that we will be taking next week.  These will likely last around 20-30 minutes each, depending how well the children follow directions and catch on to the process.  We will use part of our math lesson time to take the practice test.  The test itself will be given the week of Jan 25 and will take a little longer.  We will probably use either Writer's Workshop for the test.

Monday
We WILL NOT have school on Monday.  Dr. Clendening is in the process of applying for a waiver so that we do not have to make up the day missed in December.  If we don't get the waiver, it is looking like we will use President's Day to make it up.  So enjoy this 3-day weekend!

Winter Weather, Recess, and Snow Boots
Winter is finally here!  And with that, we see a lot of days of indoor recess due to extreme cold and/or a snow covered playground.  On the days that the temperature (windchill included) is 25 or above, we will be going out as long as the blacktop is free of snow and ice.  That being said, we have been stuck inside all week.  Indoor recess can be fun at first, but sometimes becomes mundane for the kids, or can become a problem as the kids get stir-crazy. If your child wears snow boots to school, it is a good idea to send in a regular pair of tennis shoes to change into while at school.  This not only ensures they have proper shoes for PE on Tuesdays, but the boots can also be hard to walk in all day for some kiddos.  Thanks for your help with this.

Mrs. Vidal
Yesterday, Mrs. Vidal came and did her January guidance lesson with us.  She talked about being a "whole body listener".  Ask your child if they can remember the Biscotti Karate with cookie monster, and the steps to being a whole body listener. :)

Tuesday
Tuesday I will be out of the classroom at a math textbook conference.  When I told the class today, they were a little worried and concerned.  I reassured them that they will have a great sub, and everything will run as normal.  We also talked about behavior for a sub, and how it should be even better than it is for me!  Please remind them Tuesday morning about the sub so they aren't worried, and also remind them about proper behavior.  Thanks for your help with this!

Superkids Test
We finished Progress test 5 earlier this week for Superkids, and I have those results recorded. A copy of your child's test results is coming home in folders today.  Please look it over and let me know if you have any questions!

Champions of Character
Congrats to Grace and Kyle!  They were picked, along with an handful of other students from Creekside, to be recognized as a Champion of Character at an upcoming high school basketball game!  Way to go Grace and Kyle!  Keep up the great bucketfilling, champion behavior!

Have a great 3 day weekend!
